How to plan clothes and laundry around the days of Hajj, what to pack for Mina and Arafat, and when to get your laundry done in Makkah.
The easiest way to handle laundry during Hajj is to plan it in three stages: get everything washed in Makkah before you leave for Mina, pack enough clean clothes and spare ihram for the days in Mina, Arafat and Muzdalifah, and send your laundry the day you return to your hotel. Washing clothes in the camps is difficult, so the planning happens before you leave Makkah.
Most pilgrims spend several nights in Mina, usually from the 8th of Dhul Hijjah, with the day of Arafat and a night in Muzdalifah in between. In standard Mina tents, guides describe shared bathrooms and washing points used by many pilgrims, with little private space. There is no practical way to wash, dry and store clothes for several days in that setting.
The heat adds to the problem. Packing guides for Hajj recommend that men carry a spare ihram set because the white cloth can become soiled quickly in the heat.
In the days before the 8th of Dhul Hijjah, get all your laundry done in Makkah so you leave with a full set of clean clothes. That includes:
If you need your ihram for the days of Hajj, ask for it to be washed with unscented detergent and no softener. Scented products are prohibited while in the state of ihram, which is why packing guides recommend fragrance-free toiletries. Our ihram washing guide covers this in more detail.
Pack light but complete. Space in the tents is limited, and you will carry your bag between sites.
| Item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Spare ihram set (men) | The ihram can get dirty quickly in the heat and crowds |
| One clean outfit per day (women) | There is little chance to wash clothes in the camps |
| Fresh underwear and socks for each day | Keeps you comfortable in the heat |
| A separate bag for used clothes | Keeps dirty clothes away from clean ones |
| Fragrance-free soap and wipes | Scented products are not allowed in ihram |
Packing each day’s clothes in its own small bag makes it easier to find what you need in a crowded tent.
After the days in Mina, most pilgrims return to their hotel with a bag of clothes worn in heat and dust. Plan to hand this over as soon as you are back. If you are flying home soon after Hajj, tell the laundry your departure date so everything is back clean and folded before you leave.
Demand for laundry rises sharply around Hajj, when the city is at its busiest. Ordering early, and being clear about your checkout time, gives the best chance of a quick return. Read how our same-day laundry in Makkah works if you are short on time.
Haram Laundry Makkah offers free laundry pickup and delivery around Masjid al-Haram and nearby areas. Hand your bag over before you leave for Mina and again when you return, and we bring it back clean and folded. Groups can use our hotel laundry pickup service for collection from reception.
There is very little opportunity. Standard Mina tents have shared bathrooms and washing points used by many pilgrims, so most people pack enough clean clothes and wash everything before and after the days in Mina.
Packing guides recommend that men take at least two ihram sets, so there is a clean spare if one becomes soiled in the heat.
If you will wear it again while in the state of ihram, wash it with an unscented detergent and no fabric softener, because scented products are prohibited in ihram. If in doubt, ask a scholar you trust.
Wash everything in Makkah before leaving for Mina on the 8th of Dhul Hijjah, then send your used clothes as soon as you return to your hotel. Tell the laundry your departure date if you are flying home soon after.
