Practical tips for keeping your ihram clean, white and comfortable during Umrah and Hajj, including when to avoid scented detergent.
Your ihram is the most important garment you bring to Makkah. Two simple pieces of white, unstitched cloth carry a lot of meaning, and keeping them clean and comfortable helps you focus on your worship. Here is how to wash and care for your ihram before, during and after Umrah.
Wash a new ihram once before you travel. New fabric often has a slightly stiff finish, and one wash makes it softer and more comfortable against the skin. Many pilgrims bring two sets, so one can be washed while the other is worn. If you are performing Hajj, read our guide to planning laundry during Hajj.
Wearing perfume is one of the prohibitions of ihram. Many scholars advise that if you will wear the cloth again while you are still in the state of ihram, it should be washed without perfumed detergent or fabric softener. If in doubt, ask a scholar you trust, and tell your laundry clearly that you need unscented washing.
Makkah’s heat helps clothes dry quickly, but strong sun can make white towelling feel rough. A gentle tumble dry or drying in the shade keeps the fabric softer. If your hotel room has no space to hang wet cloth, a laundry service will return it fully dry and folded. The same washing rules keep a thobe bright, as our guide to washing a white thobe explains.
Many pilgrims keep their ihram as a meaningful reminder of the journey. Wash it, dry it completely, and store it folded in a clean cotton bag. Avoid plastic bags for long-term storage, as they can trap moisture.
At Haram Laundry Makkah, white garments such as ihram and thobes are washed separately to keep them bright. Tell us when you order if you need unscented washing. We collect from your hotel and return your ihram clean, dry and folded. See our laundry service in Makkah for details.
